For years, Amazon Kindle users had to deal with a major headache: the EPUB format. Despite EPUB being the universal standard for ebooks, Kindles don't naturally support it. Readers had to resort to complicated conversion software like Calibre just to get a book onto their device.

Fortunately, those days are long gone. Amazon now fully supports EPUB files through its Send to Kindle service, converting them automatically so they work flawlessly whether you're using a Kindle device, or the Kindle app on an iPad, Tablet or other supported device.

If you have an EPUB file sitting on your computer or phone and want to add it to your Kindle Library, here is a complete, step-by-step guide on how to download EPUBs and use the Send to Kindle web app to transfer them in seconds.

Step 1: Download Your EPUB Book

An EPUB file is a widely used ebook format. You can find and download them from various sources, but protect your security by making sure it is a legitimate online source

Simply click download on the link for book of your choice and save the .epub file to your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

NOTE: Make sure you remember where you save the file to so you can find it for Step 3. By default, most files save to a "Downloads" folder.

Step 2: Open the Send to Kindle Web App

While you can email files to your Kindle, the easiest, fastest, and most reliable method is using Amazon’s dedicated web portal.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to the official Send to Kindle web app: amazon.com/sendtokindle.

  2. If prompted, log in using the exact same Amazon account that is linked to your Kindle device or Kindle reading app.

Step 3: Drag, Drop, and Send!

Once you are on the Send to Kindle interface, the process is incredibly straightforward:

  1. Upload your file: You will see a large box that says "Drag and drop files here" or "Select files from device." Drag your downloaded EPUB file directly into this box, or click it to browse your device's storage and select the file.

  2. Set your preferences: You will see an option labeled "Add to your library." Make sure this is toggled ON. This ensures the book is permanently saved to your cloud library, allowing you to access it across multiple devices (like your Kindle e-reader and your phone's Kindle app) and sync your reading progress.

  3. Click Send: Hit the "Send" button at the bottom.

Amazon will now process the file. It will upload the EPUB, automatically convert it into a Kindle-friendly format, and deliver it to your cloud library. This usually takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 15 minutes depending on the file size.

Step 4: Open the ePub and Read on Your Kindle

Now, pick up your Kindle device (or open the Kindle app on your phone/tablet).

  1. Ensure your Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi.

  2. Go to your Library.

  3. If you don't see the book immediately, tap the Sync icon (or go to Settings > Sync My Kindle).

  4. The new book will appear at the top of your library with a small "Docs" banner or as a standard ebook. Tap the cover to download it to your device and start reading!

Tips for a Smooth Transfer:

You can now read an ePub file on your Kindle app or device. Follow these tips for better transfers.

  • File Size Limit: The Send to Kindle web app supports files up to 200 MB, which is massive and more than enough for almost any standard text-based EPUB.

  • DRM Protection: Send to Kindle only works for DRM-free (Digital Rights Management) EPUB files. If a book is locked by copyright protection from another ecosystem (like Apple Books), it won't upload successfully.

Happy reading!
